Overview
Edward served as a Summer Associate with the firm’s IP practice group in 2023. In his role, he drafted office action responses for software patents for overcoming 101, 102, and 103 rejections and participated in deposition and deposition preparation. He served as a Judicial Extern for the Honorable Kristen L. Mix, U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado in 2022. There, he drafted opinions including motions to transfer, motions to dismiss for patent cases, and motions to compel arbitration, and he observed court proceedings such as claims constructions and hearings on trademark infringement.
While attending the University of Illinois College of Law, Edward completed the research project “Game of the Four – Interactions of the Patent Systems of China, HK, Taiwan, and Macau,” guided by the law school’s director of IP and Technology. The project researched the patent systems in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau and analyzed how inventors can claim priority dates and assert patent rights in each system. He also completed a research project in patent alliance and patent portfolio management guided by the founder and CEO of a national patent research and IP strategy firm. The project researched the current legislation and market of patent alliance as well as methods of more effectively managing patent portfolios.
While attending the University of Illinois College of Law, he also participated in both the patent clinic and the trademark clinic. In the patent clinic, he drafted patent applications for inventors in the field of artificial intelligence and medicine. In the trademark clinic, he helped registrants with trademark strategies and registering for trademarks.
As a student at the University of Rochester in New York, Edward completed a research project for the legislation of cryptocurrencies guided by the director of Master Studies in Finance. Edward collaborated with attorneys from the U.S., China, and Hong Kong to compare different legal procedures of Initial Coin Offerings and securities law of cryptocurrencies across the globe. He researched and reported different blockchain structures and their coding differences.
In addition to his legal expertise, Edward is fluent in R, C/C++, Python, Java, and SQL and experienced in neural networks, artificial intelligence, machine vision (including vision transformers), machine learning, and statistical methods such as time series analysis, KNN, and SVM.
