History of the building
- The Calfee Building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Designed by William Bunker Tubby, this building is valued for its significant architecture as well as the role it played in Cleveland’s commerce from 1915 – 1952.
- It was built for The East Ohio Gas Company and opened in 1916. Over the years, it has been home to a number of businesses, including WKYC radio and TV.
- The Mike Douglas Show was produced here in the 1960s.
About the space
- There are seven floors in the building, including a two-story atrium, plus three sub-street level floors.
- The space contains 115,00 square feet, with room for expansion over an adjacent garage.
- Multiple collaborative spaces as well as a conference center were built into the design of the space, to foster creativity and efficiency among our people in delivering quality work product and service to our clients.
- The space was renovated with the goal of achieving LEED Interior Design & Construction certification (see details below).
- Easier access to our space for clients will be available via a cutout drive in front and adjacent garage to open in May 2012.
- Amenities such as the Market (which includes daily fresh fruits, vegetables, soups and salads), café, and collaborative spaces all allow for relaxed, face-to-face interactions among everyone who works at Calfee.
- Fitness center, exercise studio, bike storage, lockers, and showers adjacent to fitness spaces promote the firm’s commitment to wellness.
- Flexible spaces can be used for multiple purposes: meetings, teleconferences, seminars, community, and social events.
- Wireless access throughout the facility.
- Flat panels with computers or computer connections in each conference room.
- Five main conference rooms on Floors 1 and 2 have professional-grade audio conference systems. There is a video conferencing room with two LCD displays and recording capability.
- High-tech glass walls on second floor not only meet historic renovation guidelines, but allow for privacy at the flick of a switch.
- Upper story conference rooms have writable walls for planning and brainstorming.
- Water-conserving fixtures throughout building: lighting controls switch or dim the lights in response to daylight levels; occupancy sensors that will turn off lighting in areas not in use.
- Windows replicated with energy efficient features.
- A new white roof will reduce heat gain on the building and lessen the building’s overall energy usage to compensate.
- Low VOC paints, carpet, furniture, and other project materials and finishes were used.
- The new mechanical equipment installed for Calfee meets/exceeds the stringent efficiency requirements required for LEED certification.
- The developer and landlord is CRM; the architect for the building was Sandvick Architects. Cleveland Construction served as the general contractor responsible for the core and shell of the building. The Albert M. Higley Co. was the construction manager/general contractor for the interior.
- The architect for Calfee’s space was Vocon.
- Ongoing contracts with local vendors include security, maintenance, cleaning, and food service.
