Calfee has been named a “Go-To Law Firm” in Intellectual Property (2007, 2009) and in General Litigation (2008), according to surveys of in-house law departments at Fortune 500 companies. The surveys were conducted by Corporate Counsel/ALM. Less than one half of one percent of all the law firms worldwide receive this distinction.
For several years, Calfee has been recognized by clients and Chambers & Partners as providing high quality legal service. The firm has been recognized in the areas of Banking and Finance, Bankruptcy/Restructuring, Construction, Corporate/M&A, Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation, General Commercial Litigation, Intellectual Property, Natural Resources and Environment, and Real Estate. Most recently, in addition to the firm rankings, 18 of the firm’s attorneys were ranked individually as leaders in their respective fields. The Chambers USA Guide is a well-known legal resource used by general counsel and other purchasers of legal services in search of qualified, experienced legal counsel.
Al Lucas, a senior litigation partner in Calfee’s Columbus office, has been named a 2012 Client Service All-Star by The BTI Consulting Group Inc. Tom McKee, chairman of Calfee, was honored in 2008 as part of an exclusive group of 148 attorneys nationwide to be named “Client Service All-Stars.” The BTI Consulting Group, Inc., a national strategic market research firm located in Wellesley, MA, interviewed corporate counsel of Fortune 1000 companies across the country on all aspects of client relationships. Unprompted with firm or individual names, Tom was honored among the select few who truly stand out and deliver “the absolute best client service.”
Thirty-two Calfee Attorneys have been honored among 2013’s Best Lawyers in America. The Best Lawyers in America is a resource for both lawyers and consumers in search of legal talent nationwide. The recognition is a compiled list of outstanding attorneys based on exhaustive peer-review surveys in which thousands of leading lawyers confidentially evaluate their professional peers. Calfee ranked number one in Cleveland for biotechnology and securities law.
Calfee has received top-tier rankings in several practice areas in the inaugural 2013 U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” listing. The U.S. News – Best Lawyers rankings are determined by a survey that is based on information from law firms and law firm clients on the factors that they consider most important when hiring a law firm, referring clients to a firm and seeking employment within a firm.
Calfee attorney Thomas Cicarella has been repeatedly selected as a Leading Lawyer for making an impact on our firm and the Northeast Ohio region. Leading Lawyers are nominated and selected by a jury of peers. Those chosen must have at least one nomination from outside their firm. Same-firm ballots are given less weight than the outside votes.
Six Calfee attorneys have received “Lawyer of the Year” honors in the 2013 edition of Best Lawyers in America.
In 2008, Calfee ranked in the top 50 list of the “Most Active Law Firms in Private Equity.” Calfee was also recognized as one of the nation’s “Most Active Law Firms in Fund Formation” by Dow Jones Private Equity Analyst in 2006, 2007 & 2009. Law firms are ranked based on the number of private equity and venture capital deals they have negotiated and closed on the previous year.
Since 2004, many of Calfee’s attorneys have been routinely recognized by Ohio Super Lawyers. In 2013, 29 Calfee attorneys were named to the Ohio Super Lawyers list. Super Lawyers is a rating service of exceptional attorneys from more than 70 practice areas who have achieved a high-degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. Only five percent of attorneys in the state are selected every year.
For the past seven years, several Calfee attorneys have been repeatedly recognized as “Ohio Super Lawyer Rising Stars” by their peers and through the independent research of Law & Politics. In 2013, 15 of our attorneys were named to the Rising Stars list. Rising Stars recognizes the best attorneys in the state who are either 40 or under or who have been practicing 10 or fewer years.
Calfee was named as one of the “Top 25 Law Firms in Real Estate” in Midwest Real Estate News magazine’s “2011 Best of the Best” issue. The rankings are based on law firm surveys regarding number, size and type of real estate transactions completed during the previous year. Calfee’s Real Estate group has appeared on this list multiple times.
From 2002-2007, Calfee has been named by Corporate Board Member Magazine as one of the Top 5 Corporate Law Firms in Cleveland. This Legal Industry Research Study is sponsored by FTI, a Baltimore-based consulting firm. Corporate Board Member/FTI’s annual study identifies the top 20 national corporate law firms and the top five corporate law firms in 25 major metropolitan areas, according to CEOs and directors serving on boards of publicly traded companies listed with the NASDAQ Stock Market, New York Stock Exchange or American Stock Exchange.
The Greater Cleveland Partnership has recognized Calfee as a member of the Commission 50, honored for progress in creating, enhancing and sustaining diversity and inclusion strategies. This recognition is based on responses to the Commission on Economic Inclusion’s annual Employers Survey on Diversity™. The scores are determined based on four metrics: board diversity, senior management diversity, workforce diversity and supplier diversity.
Calfee has had two attorneys honored with this award, Virginia Benjamin (2005) and Marcia Wexberg (2007). This award that recognizes businesswomen who contribute to the success and bottom line of their organizations, are role models and mentors for women, and who demonstrate strong community involvement. Recipients are nominated by Northern Ohio Live readers, Rainmakers and other community leaders, and are chosen by an advisory board.
Calfee is one of two firms in the state of Ohio to receive the 2009 Ohio Women’s Bar Association Family Friendly Award. The award honors legal employers in Ohio who best exemplify a commitment to establishing work-life balance arrangements that ensure that lawyers can take care of their families while still pursuing a successful career.
Several of Calfee’s attorneys have been recognized as “40 Under Forty” professionals by Crain’s Cleveland. The nominees for this award must be under 40 at the time of publication and they live inNortheast Ohio. The recipients of this award demonstrate excellence in their field and involvement in civic, charitable, and/or professional activities.
Nominations for the 40 Under Forty award are taken for people in Greater Columbus, under the age of 40. A panel of six judges individually reviews the entries and scores each nominee on three criteria: professional development, awards and recognitions and community involvement. The scores are combined and the highest 40 scores determine the honorees. Troy Terakedis was among the 2009 honorees, selected from nearly 500 nominees.
The Pillar program recognizes companies and their employees for their service and demonstrates the connection between the for-profit and nonprofit communities. The Nonprofit Board Executive of the Year Award recognizes nonprofit board members for sharing their business expertise. Calfee’s chairman, Thomas F. McKee, was named a 2006 Nonprofit Board Executive of the Year, in association with the Pillar Award for Community Service program.
This award recognizes women who not only are leaders at their companies and organizations, but who have risen above adversity and have demonstrated courage and perseverance along the way. Nominations are submitted online and include information about the nominees’ personal and professional involvement in civic, charitable and/or professional activities. Each year, only 12 women are honored with this award.
Calfee partner Marcia Wexberg was honored with the “Women of Achievement” award in 2009. Recipients of this award must demonstrate professional excellence, community involvement, outstanding leadership qualities, be a mentor who has helped other women achieve their goals, and exemplify the YWCA’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women. Any individual, group or organization can submit nominations for this award.
Calfee partner Virginia Benjamin received the “Most Powerful and Influential Women in Ohio” award in 2009. Recipients of this award must demonstrate high ethical standards, outstanding leadership qualities, professional excellence, community involvement, and having made an impact on their companies’ performance.
This award recognizes organizations of varying size that display philanthropy in the areas of arts & humanities, education, environmental & civic and health & human services. Calfee won in 2007 in the Education category, and was a Finalist in 2008, 2010 and 2012 in the same category.
