The Calfee Building is awarded “Green +” certification through 2015 from the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association for its energy savings, recycling and sustainability practices. “Green +” is the highest certification awarded by the Bar Association’s Green Initiative Committee.
For several years, Calfee has been recognized by clients and Chambers & Partners as providing high quality legal service. Two Calfee attorneys have received “Lawyer of the Year” honors in the 2015 edition of Best Lawyers in America.
Calfee has received top-tier rankings in several practice areas in the inaugural 2015 U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” listing. The U.S. News – Best Lawyers rankings are determined by a survey that is based on information from law firms and law firm clients on the factors that they consider most important when hiring a law firm, referring clients to a firm and seeking employment within a firm.
Calfee is again ranked among the top law firms serving large companies in the 2015 BTI Client Service study, coming in at No. 58 among the 650 firms included from across the nation. The survey by the national consulting group BTI ranks law firms on client service performance, based on direct feedback from corporate counsel.
Calfee is included in BTI’s annual “Client Service A-Team” which recognizes law firms with excellent client service. The only way for a firm to be included in this national ranking is to be recognized, by name and unprompted, by one or more of its clients as providing outstanding client service.
In 2013 and 2014, recent surveys by BTI Consulting Group recognized Calfee as one of the most-feared litigation firms in the United States. BTI conducted more than 300 one-on-one telephone interviews with general counsels and heads of litigation at large corporations. Calfee is among the 75 firms included on the “Honor Roll of Most Feared Litigation Firms 2014.”
Seven Calfee attorneys have been singled out for recognition as “Local Litigation Stars” in the 2016 edition of Benchmark Litigation, an independent guide to America’s leading litigation firms and attorneys. In addition, the firm’s Litigation practice overall was profiled in the “Recommended Firms” listing, one of only 18 firms in Ohio to have its litigation practice recognized.
Matt Parrish, partner in Calfee’s Cincinnati office, has been named a “Leading Lawyer” for Commerical & Trust by “Cincy” magazine. Honorees are nominated by their peers in Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeast Indiana.
Since 2004, many of Calfee’s attorneys have been routinely recognized by Ohio Super Lawyers. In 2015, 34 Calfee attorneys were named to the Ohio Super Lawyers list. Super Lawyers is a rating service of exceptional attorneys from more than 70 practice areas who have achieved a high-degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. Only five percent of attorneys in the state are selected every year.
For the past eight years, several Calfee attorneys have been repeatedly recognized as “Ohio Super Lawyer Rising Stars” by their peers and through the independent research of Law & Politics. In 2015, 16 of our attorneys were named to the Rising Stars list. Rising Stars recognizes the best attorneys in the state who are either 40 or under or who have been practicing 10 or fewer years.

The rankings are based on law firm surveys regarding number, size and type of real estate transactions completed during the previous year. Calfee’s Real Estate group has appeared on this list multiple times.
The Greater Cleveland Partnership has recognized Calfee as a member of the Commission 50, honored for progress in creating, enhancing and sustaining diversity and inclusion strategies. This recognition is based on responses to the Commission on Economic Inclusion’s annual Employers Survey on Diversity™. The scores are determined based on four metrics: board diversity, senior management diversity, workforce diversity and supplier diversity.
Several of Calfee’s attorneys and administrators have been profiled in Kaleidoscope magazine’s annual “Forty-Forty” issue that recognizs 40 young African-American achievers for their contribution in their careers and communities.
Calfee partner Teresa Metcalf Beasley has been chosen as a 2014 Woman of Note by Crain’s Cleveland. This award recognizes women who not only are leaders at their companies and organizations, but who have risen above adversity and have demonstrated courage and perseverance along the way. Nominations are submitted online and include information about the nominees’ personal and professional involvement in civic, charitable and/or professional activities. Each year, only 15 women are honored with this award.
Calfee partners Marcia Wexberg and Virginia Benjamin were honored with the “Women of Achievement” award. Recipients of this award must demonstrate professional excellence, community involvement, outstanding leadership qualities, be a mentor who has helped other women achieve their goals, and exemplify the YWCA’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women. Any individual, group or organization can submit nominations for this award.

This prestigious award is bestowed upon someone who has attained and embodies the highest level of professional excellence in his/her business or profession, has devoted time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community and actively assists women in realizing their leadership potential. Calfee partner Virginia Benjamin was a finalist for the award in 2012.

Recipients of this award must demonstrate high ethical standards, outstanding leadership qualities, professional excellence, community involvement, and having made an impact on their companies’ performance.
Calfee has been named a “Go-To Law Firm” in Intellectual Property (2007, 2009) and in General Litigation (2008), according to surveys of in-house law departments at Fortune 500 companies. The surveys were conducted by Corporate Counsel/ALM. Less than one half of one percent of all the law firms worldwide receive this distinction.

The award honors legal employers in Ohio who best exemplify a commitment to establishing work-life balance arrangements that ensure that lawyers can take care of their families while still pursuing a successful career.
The Pillar program recognizes companies and their employees for their service and demonstrates the connection between the for-profit and nonprofit communities. The Nonprofit Board Executive of the Year Award recognizes nonprofit board members for sharing their business expertise. Calfee’s chairman, Thomas F. McKee, was named a 2006 Nonprofit Board Executive of the Year, in association with the Pillar Award for Community Service program.
In 2008, Calfee ranked in the top 50 list of the “Most Active Law Firms in Private Equity.” Calfee was also recognized as one of the nation’s “Most Active Law Firms in Fund Formation” by Dow Jones Private Equity Analyst in 2006, 2007 & 2009. Law firms are ranked based on the number of private equity and venture capital deals they have negotiated and closed on the previous year.
