Ryan’s primary focus is intellectual property law. He counsels both public and privately-held companies in connection with stand-alone technology and intellectual property transactions such as intellectual property acquisitions, licensing agreements, joint ventures, strategic alliances, research and development collaborations, and other types of technology transactions. He also works closely with lawyers in Calfee’s M&A, Private Equity, Securities and Capital Markets, and Commercial Business and Finance practices in connection with intellectual property matters related to mergers and acquisitions and other types of transactions.
He assists in preparing and prosecuting U.S. and foreign utility and design patent applications for publicly and privately-held businesses, institutional clients and individuals. Ryan also assists clients in matters of licensing, trade secrets, patent infringement and patent validity concerns.
Ryan also works closely with clients to prepare and prosecute U.S. trademark applications and to oversee the prosecution of foreign trademark applications. Ryan assists clients in the administration and maintenance of large trademark portfolios including U.S. and foreign trademark registrations. Ryan also counsels clients on the selection, clearance, maintenance, licensing, enforcement and use of their trademarks. Ryan has also represented many clients in proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
Ryan also assists clients in matters relating to computer software, e-commerce and business development on the Internet, including software and hosting services procurement agreements, licensing, software development, cloud computing and SaaS subscriptions, service level agreements, other web-based agreements and dispute resolution involving domain names.
Ryan is a member of the American, Ohio State and Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Associations. He is also active in the American and Cleveland Intellectual Property Law Associations. He recently joined the Board of the YMCA of Greater Cleveland’s French Creek (Avon) Branch, and was also named to the Board of The Entrepreneurship Institute.
Ryan graduated magna cum laude from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 2003, earning his B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Akron in 2000. He joined Calfee in 2003 and became a partner in 2012.
